| Deloitte: 4G Could Add to GDP |
A new report from Deloitte states that investment in LTE could potentially create $151 billion in GDP growth in the US and that wireless carriers are expected to spend $25 to $53 billion to deploy the systems between 2012 and 2016. The report says that this could produce $73 billion to $151 billion in GDP growth and create 371,000 to 771,000 new jobs. The $25 billion figure assumes deployment of 4G, essentially LTE, will continue its current pace and the transition from 3G to 4G technology will take place through 2015. Spending of $53 billion assumes a more rapid 4G deployment, which might fend off competition from foreign companies into the market. All of these assumptions of course assume that development of LTE-enabled products will continue to be offered in large numbers and that cost issues can be addressed. That is, the current MSRP of an LTE smart phone (or 3G enabled phone for that matter) is far higher than “phones” in the past that weren't essentially wireless-enabled computers. Deloitte says that more than 150 carriers in 60 countries have committed to deploying 4G networks.
