IEEE 802.11ac: Challenges for Manufacturing TestKeeping the Right Perspective on Timing

By E.L. Fox, Jr.
Fox Electronics

Discussions about technology have the power to clarify or the power to confuse, depending on the perspective they take. And when you overlay business desires for smaller, more powerful, more economical, and more energy-efficient components, it becomes even easier to overlook the underlying physics behind technology options.

LightSquared:
The Show’s Over
…Or Should Be
By Barry Manz

There are a lot of very technically astute people at the Federal Communications Commission. Many have decades of experience at every level of RF and microwave technology. How then might LightSquared’s proposal for a satellite/terrestrial LTE network have ever gotten past its first hurdle? Even a cursory inspection of the plan, in which the company's network would operate extremely close to GPS frequencies at L-band, makes interference to GPS devices almost a certainty. Read More...

LTE Inching Closer at AT&T

George Devol A Microwave Man As Well

George Charles Devol, Jr., who died on August 11 at 99, and was awarded a patent for Unimate, the first digitally-operated programmable robotic arm, was also a “sensors guy”, and while holding more than 40 patents, also had a hand in development of the first microwave oven. Dr. Percy Spencer, the self-taught Raytheon engineer and co-creator of the microwave oven, was in 1946 along with associate P.R. (Roly) Hanson), working on a secret project they called "the Speedy Weenie". Devol, who was at the time inventing sensors that automatically opened doors and laundry presses and photoelectric detectors that automatically counted people going through the turnstiles at the New York World’s Fair, was apparently also involved in the project. As the story goes, while testing a new vacuum tube called a magnetron, Spencer noticed that the candy bar in his pocket had melted. So he then placed some popcorn kernels near the tube and watched with fascination as the popcorn cracked and popped all over his lab. This rest is, of course, history.
