Two Sides of the DoD Coin: Budgets Slashed, UAV Market Soars

By Fred Ortiz, President
dB Control

As we embark on a new year, imminent cuts to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) budget are top of mind for those of us in the military electronics market. At a recent House Armed Services Committee hearing, the nation’s military chiefs cited a $600 billion defense cut as “catastrophic to the military” and having a “severe and irreversible impact.”

LightSquared:
The Show’s Over
…Or Should Be
By Barry Manz

There are a lot of very technically astute people at the Federal Communications Commission. Many have decades of experience at every level of RF and microwave technology. How then might LightSquared’s proposal for a satellite/terrestrial LTE network have ever gotten past its first hurdle? Even a cursory inspection of the plan, in which the company's network would operate extremely close to GPS frequencies at L-band, makes interference to GPS devices almost a certainty. Read More...

Healthcare to Spend 4$ Billion on DAS by 2015

A report from In-Stat forecasts that hospitals and healthcare expenditures for Distributed Antenna System (DAS) installations will surpass $4 billion in 2015, largely to improve signal quality within the labyrinthine structures of medical facilities. The report states that the new challenge for DAS is to accommodate the need for wideband channels, which is allowing DAS contractors to differentiate their products depending on how many wireless bands and services they can support for a given cost. Other statistics in the report include global DAS revenue of at least $13 billion in 2015 and news that 15,000 nodes were deployed in metro area outdoor DAS in 2010. The report, “Distributed Antenna Systems—DAS to Fill In Gaps,” covers the number and revenues of new DAS deployments by eight major vertical markets and six regions for the years 2009 through 2015 in applications including government buildings, hospitals and healthcare facilities, offices and corporate campuses, convention centers and sports arenas, universities and school campuses, transportation, depots, airports, stadiums, and other sites including hotels, and casinos.
