Two Sides of the DoD Coin: Budgets Slashed, UAV Market Soars
By Fred Ortiz, President
dB Control
As we embark on a new year, imminent cuts to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) budget are top of mind for those of us in the military electronics market. At a recent House Armed Services Committee hearing, the nation’s military chiefs cited a $600 billion defense cut as “catastrophic to the military” and having a “severe and irreversible impact.”

LightSquared:
The Show’s Over
…Or Should Be
By Barry Manz
There are a lot of very technically astute people at the Federal Communications Commission. Many have decades of experience at every level of RF and microwave technology. How then might LightSquared’s proposal for a satellite/terrestrial LTE network have ever gotten past its first hurdle? Even a cursory inspection of the plan, in which the company's network would operate extremely close to GPS frequencies at L-band, makes interference to GPS devices almost a certainty. Read More...

| Time Warner Cable Mobile Hotspot Connects Up to Eight Users |
Time Warner Cable's IG2 Personal Mobile Hotspot can connect up to eight other Wi-Fi devices and is made by Sierra Wireless. Both the IG2 and its predecessor, IntelliGo, are very small, measuring only 2.67 x 2.67 x 0.68 in. thick, and have a 1.6 in. LCD display. The mobile hotspot includes both WiMAX and 3G CDMA connections, supposedly covers up to 150 ft. either indoors or outdoors, and its Wi-Fi capability extends to IEEE 802.11n. The IG2 is available for TWC business and residential customers for $49.99 with a two-year agreement. It can be expanded with the 32 Gbyte microSD card and battery life is between four and six hours. TWC says the device boots up about 35% faster than its predecessor as well.
