Tech researcher receives $400,000 award from foundation
Changzhi Li, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Texas Tech, has received a $400,000 Faculty Early Career award from the National Science Foundation for his project, “Smart Radar Sensor for Pervasive Motion-Adaptive Health Applications.” The money will be used to continue project advancement. The research is based on the smart radar sensor and it will be used for vital sign detection. The radar can detect vital signs such as respiration and heartbeat. It can be used to monitor Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, sleep apnea, to find tumors, and to track tumors during radiotherapy. Infrared cameras are often used to locate tumors, which is difficult because during observation the patient’s body is in motion when the person is breathing. Markers are placed on the outside of the body to represent changes in movement, but the process is reportedly inaccurate. Radar can penetrate and does not require markers. Li began his research in 2006 with the intention of reducing noise created by breathing to achieve the high sensitivity required for daily use. The device transmits a signal at 24 GHz and when the signal reaches its target the reflected signal is captured by the radar receiver and sent to a laptop for processing.” National Instruments has been assisting the research and has invested $12,000.
