Two Sides of the DoD Coin: Budgets Slashed, UAV Market Soars

By Fred Ortiz, President
dB Control

As we embark on a new year, imminent cuts to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) budget are top of mind for those of us in the military electronics market. At a recent House Armed Services Committee hearing, the nation’s military chiefs cited a $600 billion defense cut as “catastrophic to the military” and having a “severe and irreversible impact.”

LightSquared:
The Show’s Over
…Or Should Be
By Barry Manz

There are a lot of very technically astute people at the Federal Communications Commission. Many have decades of experience at every level of RF and microwave technology. How then might LightSquared’s proposal for a satellite/terrestrial LTE network have ever gotten past its first hurdle? Even a cursory inspection of the plan, in which the company's network would operate extremely close to GPS frequencies at L-band, makes interference to GPS devices almost a certainty. Read More...

New Family of Rugged Embedded
The rugged flexComm™ SDR-4800 family of embedded radio modules for tactical military communications (MILCOM), data link, defense and civil satellite communications (SATCOM) systems has just been launched. The SDR-4800 product family combines high performance embedded RF and System-on-Chip (SoC) technologies with proven hardware, software and services from the SDR-4000 product line. This allows the company to deliver a highly integrated radio solution that significantly reduces the technical risk, development cost and time to deployment in its customers’ radio programs. Traditional software commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) radio architectures typically employ separate hardware modules to accomplish the signal processing functions of the radio, from RF down/up conversion to baseband and network processing. The SDR-4000 product family combines customizable embedded RF technologies with SoC field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology on a single module to reduce the overall size and power consumption of the radio system.

AM & FM Airborne Transmitter Power
Model number SSPA 0.291-60 is a high power UHF Airborne transmitter power amplifier. This model operates at 291 MHz with an AM or FM excitation. The typical output power is 100W for FM operation, and the power is typically backed off for AM operation. This RF module offers 50 dB of typical gain. The 2nd and 3rd harmonic levels are -80 dBc maximum. The internal RF components are gated on and off in less than 500 uSec maximum. Input and output VSWR is 1.5:1 maximum. This amplifier operates from a 28Vdc power supply with a typical current of 8.75A at 100W of output power. The amplifier is biased class AB so the current increases and decreases as a function of input drive. The size of this RF amplifier is approximately a width of 9.55” with length of 4.96” and height of 4.86”. Standard features include reverse polarity protection and over voltage protection with an output isolator for PA protection. The output is fully protected from an infinite VSWR at the RF output port.
