The RAFS rubidium atomic frequency standard provides high reliability and extremely low phase noise in a radiation environment that ranges from LEO to GEO. The clock consists of a VCXO locked to an atomic transition in the ground state of the Rb87 isotope. While the frequency of the VCXO is at the standard frequency of 10 MHz, the clock frequency is at 6.834 GHz. The link between the two is performed by a phase-stabilized frequency multiplication scheme in which a synthesized frequency is admixed to enable exact matching. The rubidium lamp has a life expectancy of more than 20 years, the vacuum level is 10-5 mbar, and the magnetic field is less than ± 0.5 Gauss. The atomic clock can be operated with either 28 VDC or 50 VDC.
